Last month, the six-time All-Star pitcher began facing hitters in simulated games. At the team’s complex in Tampa, Florida, he threw a total of 43 pitches last Thursday.
Cole had only made one start during spring training on March 1, but the Yankees announced 10 days later that the 33-year-old right-hander was dealing with elbow issues. He was diagnosed with nerve inflammation and edema and was advised to take a rest.
It wasn’t until May 5 that Cole returned to throwing off a mound, starting a series of five bullpen sessions leading up to his first session against hitters.
It is anticipated that Cole will make several minor league starts before rejoining the Yankees. This comes at a time when the team has already lost starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt to a right lat strain just last week.
