Ecuador’s foreign ministry announced on Tuesday that it would reinstate the visa requirement for travelers from China due to a rise in irregular migration from the Asian nation. In a statement posted on social media, the ministry explained that it was suspending the agreement with China that had previously waived the need for a visa. The ministry expressed concerns that many Chinese travelers had been overstaying the permitted 90-day period, and some may have been using Ecuador as a transit point to reach other destinations in the region. According to the ministry, nearly half of the recent visitors from China did not exit the country through regular routes within the designated timeframe.
