An Australian woman has died, and her friend remains in critical condition following a suspected case of mass methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng, Laos.
The incident, which occurred on November 12, involved a group of around twelve tourists. Among them were two 19-year-old Australian women, Bianca Jones and Holly Bowles, who reportedly fell ill after a night out in the popular tourist town.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed Jones’ death in parliament, stating, “Tragically, Bianca Jones has lost her life. Our first thoughts at this moment are with her family and friends who are grieving a terrible and cruel loss.”
Albanese also expressed concern for Bowles, saying, “We also take this moment to say that we are thinking of Bianca’s friend Holly Bowles who is fighting for her life.”
Bowles’ father, Shaun Bowles, confirmed his daughter is on life support in a Bangkok hospital.
Jones’ family released a statement to Australia’s Herald Sun newspaper, saying, “We are comforted by the knowledge that her incredible spirit touched so many lives during her time with us. The kindness shown to our family during this unimaginable time has been truly humbling.”
Two Danish citizens and one US citizen have also reportedly died in Laos under similar circumstances. While details remain limited, media reports suggest the deaths are connected to the consumption of tainted alcohol in Vang Vieng.
The US State Department confirmed the “death of a U.S. citizen in Vang Vieng, Laos,” and stated they are “closely monitoring the situation and providing consular assistance.” The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed the deaths of two Danish citizens to Danish media.
Vang Vieng, known for its adventure tourism, was once a popular destination for backpacker parties. In recent years, the town has attempted to rebrand itself as an eco-tourism destination.
