Despite approaching his 38th birthday on July 1, Blackmon’s performance against the Cleveland Guardians proved that he still possesses an undeniable talent. With a three-run homer, two doubles, and four RBIs, he played a pivotal role in the Rockies’ 8-6 victory. Additionally, Blackmon demonstrated his defensive prowess by making a remarkable sliding catch in foul territory to retire Kyle Manzardo in the sixth inning.
This impressive win against the Guardians, following a successful series against the Philadelphia Phillies, who currently hold the best record in the National League, showed that the Rockies have the ability to cool off even the hottest teams in baseball.
The Guardians, who had the best record in the AL on Monday, arrived in Denver with a nine-game winning streak. This was their longest streak since August 24-September 14, 2017, when they set the American League record with 22 consecutive victories.
While Blackmon stole the spotlight, lefty reliever Josh Rogers played a significant role in the game. Rogers was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque prior to the game and delivered five solid innings for the Rockies. He surrendered two runs on four hits.
Due to arm soreness, left-hander Austin Gomber was unable to start the game, leading the Rockies to give the opportunity to Anthony Molina, the Rule-5 draft acquisition. However, Molina’s performance was short-lived as he allowed three runs on two hits and three walks in just 1 2/3 innings. Rogers then entered the game and provided much-needed stability to the bullpen.
Colorado had a standout inning in the game, scoring six runs in the fourth. During this inning, nine players from the team stepped up to the plate. Elehuris Montero made a significant contribution with a two-run single, which was quickly followed by Blackmon’s powerful three-run homer to right field. This homer was especially notable as it marked Blackmon’s second of the season, and his first in 114 at-bats since April 8th.
Blackmon continued to make an impact in the game, adding an RBI double in the sixth inning. This hit allowed Sean Bouchard, who had walked and stolen second base, to cross home plate and score.
