NEW YORK – Ángel Hernández, a long-serving umpire who previously filed a lawsuit against Major League Baseball for racial discrimination, has announced his immediate retirement.
Over his impressive three-decade career, the 62-year-old Hernández was often criticized by players, managers, and fans for his missed calls and quick ejections, some of which occurred in high-profile situations.
In a statement released by MLB on Monday night, Hernández expressed his desire to prioritize spending more time with his family.
“Since my first major league game in 1991, I have been fortunate enough to fulfill my childhood dream of umpiring in the major leagues. It is truly a rewarding experience to work in a profession that brings me so much joy. Throughout my journey, I have cherished the camaraderie of my colleagues and the friendships I have formed, including the wonderful locker room attendants in the various cities I have visited,” Hernández expressed.
“Undoubtedly, there have been numerous positive changes in the game of baseball since I first started my career. One significant change is the increased focus on diversity and inclusion. I take immense pride in actively contributing towards this goal while serving as a major league umpire.”
