Japanese authorities inspect Toyota HQ over certification irregularities

Officials from Japan’s transport ministry conducted an on-site investigation at Toyota Motor’s headquarters in response to irregularities discovered in its certification applications for certain models. The scandal, which originated from safety test issues at Toyota’s Daihatsu unit, has now affected other Japanese automakers. While Toyota was the only automaker subjected to an on-site inspection, the transport ministry had previously announced plans to inspect Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha Motor after finding flawed or manipulated data in their certification applications. Toyota’s chairman, Akio Toyoda, publicly apologized for the situation during a press conference, expressing remorse to shareholders, car enthusiasts, and other stakeholders.
According to analysts at Goldman Sachs, there is a need for further improvement in governance from a compliance perspective in the future.

On Tuesday morning, the shares of Toyota declined by 1.1%, following a 1.8% loss on Monday. Honda’s shares also dropped by 2.3%. However, Suzuki and Mazda saw an increase of 0.9% in their shares.

Both Toyota and Mazda announced on Monday that they had suspended shipments of certain models.

After 11 years in the minors, Jamie Westbrook gets his moment in major league debut with the Red Sox

After an impressive 11-year career in professional baseball, Jamie Westbrook has finally received the opportunity he’s been longing for. Drafted by his hometown team, the Diamondbacks, in 2013, Westbrook has played for various teams and even ventured into independent ball in Mexico and Texas during the pandemic. He showcased his skills as an outfielder for the United States at the Tokyo Olympics. Throughout his journey, he has navigated through the minor league affiliates of the Diamondbacks, Brewers, Tigers, Yankees, and most recently, the Red Sox, always working towards his dream.

On a fateful Saturday, the 28-year-old received the call he had been eagerly awaiting his entire life. Without hesitation, Westbrook, accompanied by his wife Denise and their seven-month-old son Emmett, boarded a flight from Charlotte, N.C. to Boston, ready to embrace the big leagues.

Reflecting on the whirlwind experience, Westbrook expressed his excitement in the clubhouse after a tough 8-4, 10-inning loss to the Tigers on Sunday. “It was absolutely crazy,” he remarked.

Westbrook’s major league debut came in the bottom of the ninth inning during a tied game at 4-4. He stepped up to the plate, replacing Wilyer Abreu, with two runners on base and two outs. After taking a called strike, Westbrook displayed his patience and discipline by drawing four consecutive balls, loading the bases and showcasing his ability to make an impact in high-pressure situations.
“I was fully aware that we had a chance to win the game at that moment, so my mindset was to have a solid at-bat,” he explained. “It was an incredible experience. The crowd was roaring when I reached a 3-1 count, which made me refocus, but it was amazing.”

Following Connor Wong’s fly out, Westbrook remained in the game and took over right field in the 10th inning. This decision was something that manager Alex Cora had envisioned beforehand.

“That was an impressive at-bat, and Westbrook is capable of that,” Cora praised. “He always manages to make solid contact, has great plate appearances, hits the ball well, and he’s versatile.”

Having spent 1,159 games in the minor leagues, Westbrook’s career path hasn’t been the easiest. However, the Holyoke native, who moved to Arizona as a preteen, wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s even more satisfying now,” Westbrook expressed. “It’s been a long time coming, but today is a beautiful day.”
In December, Westbrook joined the Red Sox as a free agent. In his 49 games with Triple A Worcester, he had an impressive .267/.364/.436 (.800 OPS) line. Throughout the season, Westbrook has showcased his versatility by playing first, second, third, and right field. This adaptability is especially valuable for the Red Sox, who have been dealing with multiple injuries, including hamstring strains for Romy Gonzalez and Vaughn Grissom.

Before the game, Westbrook expressed his excitement about joining the team and his focus on contributing to their success. He stated, “I’m here to help the team win. Whatever they need me to do, I’ll be more than happy to do it to the best of my ability and enjoy it.”

Alongside Westbrook, corner infielder Bobby Dalbec was also recalled. The two have been close friends for years and even co-manage an offseason fantasy football league. Their journey to Boston together adds another layer of camaraderie to the team.
After receiving a call from Worcester manager Chad Tracy, Dalbec received a text from Tracy saying, “Westie’s going with you.” Dalbec couldn’t believe it and felt a chill run down his spine. Looking over at Westbrook in the clubhouse, Dalbec praised his teammate’s readiness for the big leagues. Despite playing for 11 years, Westbrook always gives his all and never shows any signs of letting up.

Sox reliever Greg Weissert, who was on the Yankees’ Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team with Westbrook in 2023, greeted him with a hug when they saw each other on Sunday morning. Weissert acknowledged Westbrook’s years of hard work and expressed his joy for his teammate’s success. He also mentioned his excitement for Westbrook’s family, who will have the opportunity to attend the game.
Westbrook has more than ten years of motivation driving him to secure a starting spot, but he is determined to approach his first experience at the highest level of the game with simplicity.

“I don’t need to do anything different from what has brought me here,” Westbrook stated. “I just keep reminding myself of that. I’m grateful that I never gave up.

“No matter how tough things got or where I found myself, today is the day I’ve always envisioned.”

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole to begin rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A

Last month, the six-time All-Star pitcher began facing hitters in simulated games. At the team’s complex in Tampa, Florida, he threw a total of 43 pitches last Thursday.

Cole had only made one start during spring training on March 1, but the Yankees announced 10 days later that the 33-year-old right-hander was dealing with elbow issues. He was diagnosed with nerve inflammation and edema and was advised to take a rest.

It wasn’t until May 5 that Cole returned to throwing off a mound, starting a series of five bullpen sessions leading up to his first session against hitters.

It is anticipated that Cole will make several minor league starts before rejoining the Yankees. This comes at a time when the team has already lost starting pitcher Clarke Schmidt to a right lat strain just last week.

Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston got hurt late in blowout loss. Here’s why they were still in.

BROOKLYN — Fever coach Christie Sides made a simple decision to insert star players and No. 1 picks Aliyah Boston and Caitlin Clark into a game that had a 30-point deficit in the fourth quarter: They wanted to be on the court.

“They were eager to compete,” Sides explained. “They wanted to step into the game and attempt to close the gap. They have a sense of pride and wanted to keep fighting.”

Regrettably, this decision resulted in injuries for both players.

Clark entered the game with 7 minutes and 54 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, with the Fever trailing by 30 points at 84-54. However, she sustained a hit to the ear from a screen just moments after entering. She left the game with 6 minutes and 29 seconds left, briefly seeking refuge in the locker room. She returned to the bench with approximately two minutes remaining but did not re-enter the game.
Boston joined the game with around seven minutes remaining and played for about a minute and a half before she had to exit with 5:33 left on the clock. During a tussle with Liberty backup forward Leonie Fiebich, Boston fell and immediately grasped her ankle in pain.

After lying on the floor briefly, Boston managed to stand up and limp off the court under her own power. Before heading to the locker room, she consulted with Fever athletic trainer Todd Champlin. Unfortunately, Boston did not return to the game.

The Fever ultimately suffered a 104-68 loss to the New York Liberty at Barclays Center, dropping their season record to 2-9. Coach Sides did not have any definitive updates on Boston and Clark’s conditions after the game.

“I haven’t had a chance to talk to Todd; he was still evaluating them when I went back there,” Sides stated. “All I know is that Aliyah injured her ankle and Caitlin had an issue with her ear. I don’t have any further details.”

Fortunately, both Boston and Clark will have plenty of time to rest as the Fever’s next game is not until Friday against the Mystics.

Joe Burrow misses C.J. Stroud’s latest top 5 QB rankings

C.J. Stroud, the Houston Texans quarterback, recently shared his quarterback rankings on Instagram, and surprisingly, Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow did not make the cut. Stroud’s rankings were based on last year’s performances, and he included Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, himself, Josh Allen, and Dak Prescott in his top five. It’s worth noting that Stroud had previously ranked Burrow highly in June 2023, and has spoken highly of the advice Burrow gave him when he entered the league.

GSK blood cancer drug nearly halves risk of death in late-stage trial

According to data presented at a medical meeting, GSK’s drug Blenrep has shown promising results in treating multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. In a late-stage study involving 302 patients with relapsed or difficult-to-treat multiple myeloma, Blenrep, when combined with the steroid dexamethasone and pomalidomide, nearly halved the risk of disease progression or death compared to standard-of-care treatments. After one year, 71% of patients who received the Blenrep combination were alive without their disease worsening, compared to 51% of patients treated with pomalidomide, dexamethasone, and bortezomib.
“It is of great significance to have a drug like Blenrep, which can be administered on an outpatient basis, does not require hospitalization, can be accessible in a community setting, and is not hindered by manufacturing challenges like cell therapies,” stated Hesham Abdullah, an executive in oncology at GSK, during an interview.

During the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, detailed data from the trial was presented on Sunday.

Blenrep has faced obstacles in recent years, including its removal from the lucrative U.S. market in 2022 due to its failure to demonstrate superiority over an existing treatment in a separate late-stage study.

However, the release of top-line data from this trial in March, showing a significant improvement in progression-free survival compared to the current standard treatment regimen, seemed to indicate a resurgence for the drug.
According to the company, more than half of the Blenrep patients experienced no disease progression for a median follow-up of 21.8 months, compared to 12.7 months for the standard of care. This shows the potential of the Blenrep combo to redefine the treatment of multiple myeloma, if approved. GSK plans to submit marketing applications to global regulators in the second half of 2024. Other treatments for multiple myeloma include Johnson & Johnson’s Darzalex and generic cancer drugs. The study found that eye-related side effects led to a 9% discontinuation rate, but these effects were generally reversible and manageable through dose adjustments.
According to the American Cancer Society, multiple myeloma, the second most prevalent blood cancer worldwide, originates in the bone marrow’s plasma cells and disrupts the production of regular blood cells. It is estimated that around 35,780 new cases of multiple myeloma will be diagnosed in the United States this year, resulting in approximately 12,540 deaths.

Google Is Using AI to Answer Your Health Questions. Should You Trust It?

Are you experiencing a headache or could it be a sinus infection? Wondering about the sensation of a stress fracture? Concerned about chest pain? If you search for answers to these questions on Google, you may come across responses generated by artificial intelligence. Recently, Google introduced a new feature called AI Overviews, which utilizes generative AI technology. This machine-learning technology is trained on vast amounts of internet data and can provide conversational answers to certain search queries within seconds.
Since its launch, users have encountered numerous inaccuracies and strange responses across various topics using the tool. However, experts have highlighted the significance of how it answers health-related questions. While the technology can potentially guide individuals towards healthier habits or necessary medical care, it also carries the risk of providing inaccurate information. The AI system has been known to fabricate facts and, if influenced by unreliable sources, may offer advice that contradicts medical guidance or poses a health risk to users.

An example of the system producing flawed answers based on unreliable sources is when users were advised to consume at least one rock a day for vitamins and minerals when asking “how many rocks should I eat.” This advice was actually scraped from The Onion, a satirical website.
According to Dr. Karandeep Singh, the chief health AI officer at UC San Diego Health, it is important to be cautious of the information you read and trust, especially when it comes to health-related topics. He emphasizes the significance of considering the source of the information.

Hema Budaraju, a senior director of product management at Google, who is involved in the development of AI Overview, mentioned that health-related searches have certain precautions in place. She did not provide specific details but mentioned that searches that are considered dangerous, explicit, or indicate vulnerability, such as self-harm, do not generate AI summaries.

Google did not disclose a comprehensive list of websites that support the information in AI Overviews. However, they stated that the tool works in conjunction with the Google Knowledge Graph, an existing system that aggregates billions of facts from numerous sources.

For instance, when asked about the health benefits of chocolate, Google’s answer pulls up information from research on heart health, mental health, and other relevant areas.
Responses to health questions like this one typically rely on credible sources. However, in this particular case, the answer also includes information from Venchi, an Italian chocolate and gelato company.

A similar search for the question “Is chocolate healthy for you?” yielded a response from various sources, including the website of ZOE, a company that offers at-home “gut intelligence tests” and a nutritional app.

Although the new search responses do mention some sources, such as the Mayo Clinic, WebMD, the World Health Organization, and PubMed (a scientific research hub), this list is not exhaustive. The tool can also gather information from sources like Wikipedia, blog posts, Reddit, and e-commerce websites. Additionally, it does not provide users with details about which facts come from which sources.
When conducting a search, users can usually differentiate between a reliable medical website and a candy company. However, if information from multiple sources is combined into one block of text, it can lead to confusion.

Dr. Seema Yasmin, the director of the Stanford Health Communication Initiative, expressed concern about whether people are even paying attention to the source of the information. She questioned whether users have been adequately educated to look beyond a quick answer. Dr. Yasmin’s research on misinformation has made her skeptical about the average user’s willingness to dig deeper.
According to Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and professor of medicine at Tufts University, the chocolate answer is mostly accurate and effectively summarizes the research on chocolate’s health benefits. However, it fails to differentiate between strong evidence from randomized trials and weaker evidence from observational studies. Additionally, it does not provide any caveats regarding the evidence presented.

While it is true that chocolate contains antioxidants, the claim that it can prevent memory loss has not been definitively proven and requires further clarification. Presenting these claims together may give the impression that some are more firmly established than they actually are.

Furthermore, the accuracy of the answers provided by the AI can change as the technology itself evolves, even if the underlying scientific evidence remains the same.
According to a Google spokesperson, the company has implemented disclaimers in responses where necessary, cautioning users that the information should not be taken as medical advice.

It is unclear how AI Overviews assess the strength of evidence or if it considers contradictory research findings. For instance, conflicting studies on the health benefits of coffee are not addressed. Yasmin, along with other experts, also raised concerns about whether the tool relies on outdated or disproven scientific research.

Dr. Danielle Bitterman, a physician-scientist specializing in artificial intelligence, emphasized the importance of human judgment in evaluating the quality of sources. This critical decision-making process is routinely performed by clinicians who carefully analyze the evidence.
According to experts, if tools like AI Overviews are to fulfill that role, a better understanding is needed of how they navigate different sources and apply a critical lens to generate a summary. This is concerning because the new system prioritizes the AI Overview response over individual links to reputable medical websites like the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic, which have traditionally been at the top of search results for health-related queries. A Google spokesperson clarified that AI Overviews will match or summarize the information from the top search results, but it is not intended to replace that content. Instead, it aims to provide users with an overview of the available information.
The Mayo Clinic chose not to provide a comment regarding the new responses. According to a representative from the Cleveland Clinic, individuals seeking health information should rely on reliable sources and consult a healthcare provider if they have any symptoms. A representative from Scripps Health, a healthcare system in California mentioned in some AI Overview summaries, stated that citations in Google’s AI generated responses could be useful in establishing Scripps Health as a trusted source of health information. However, the representative expressed concerns about being unable to verify the content produced by AI in the same manner as their own content, which is reviewed by medical professionals.
According to experts, when it comes to medical questions, it’s not just about the accuracy of the answer, but also how it is presented to users. Dr. Richard Gumina, the director of cardiovascular medicine at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, pointed out that the AI response to the question “Am I having a heart attack?” provided a useful summary of symptoms. However, he noted that he had to read through a long list of symptoms before the text advised him to call 911. To further test the tool, Dr. Gumina searched for “Am I having a stroke?” and found that the response was more urgent, immediately instructing users to call 911 in the first line. Based on his experience, he would strongly recommend patients experiencing symptoms of a heart attack or stroke to seek immediate help.
Health experts advise individuals to exercise caution when seeking health information from AI responses. It is important for users to pay attention to the disclaimers provided in the fine print of certain AI Overviews answers, which state that the information is intended for informational purposes only. For medical advice or diagnosis, it is recommended to consult a professional as generative AI is still in the experimental phase.

WHO member countries approve steps to bolster health regulations to better brace for pandemics

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Saturday that member countries have approved new measures to enhance global preparedness and response to pandemics like COVID-19 and mpox. They have also set a new deadline for reaching a consensus on a broader treaty.

The amendments to the International Health Regulations, last revised in 2005, were approved unanimously. These amendments include defining the term “pandemic emergency” and facilitating access to financing and medical products for developing countries, according to the WHO.

The decision was made at the conclusion of the six-day World Health Assembly, during which plans to adopt a more comprehensive pandemic “treaty” were put on hold due to disagreements between developing and wealthier nations. These disagreements primarily revolved around the equitable sharing of technology and the pathogens that cause outbreaks.

However, all countries have committed to concluding negotiations on the pandemic accord by the end of the year, at the latest, as stated by the WHO.
“The success of the amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) demonstrates that even in a world that is divided and filled with conflicts, countries can still come together to find common cause and common ground,” stated Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Lawrence Gostin, a public health law expert at Georgetown University, praised this achievement as a “big win for health security” and shared on X that it will simplify negotiations for the pandemic agreement.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), countries have defined a pandemic emergency as a communicable disease that has a widespread geographical spread or a high risk of such spread, and which exceeds or has the potential to exceed the capacity of national health systems to respond.

The WHO also defines a pandemic emergency as an outbreak that has or could cause significant economic or social disruption and requires immediate international action.
According to Steven Solomon, a legal officer at WHO, the revision of the health regulations will not be implemented immediately. Instead, it will be put into effect one year after Tedros officially informs countries about the decision.

Yuanqiong Hu, a senior legal and policy adviser at Doctors Without Borders, commented on the changes adopted on Saturday. Hu stated that these revisions include crucial provisions that tackle the issue of fairness in accessing health products during global health emergencies.
