Texans WR John Metchie wins PFWA’s George Halas Award

John Metchie III, a promising player for the Houston Texans, is set to have a breakout season. Even before the season begins, he is already making waves by winning awards.

Metchie recently received the prestigious George Halas Award for the 2024 season from the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA). This recognition is a testament to his incredible resilience and determination, as he successfully battled acute promyelocytic leukemia, a rare but treatable form of cancer.

As a second-round pick from the University of Alabama, Metchie unfortunately missed his entire rookie season while undergoing treatment. However, he bounced back last season and showcased his skills by making 16 receptions for 158 yards across 16 games.

One of Metchie’s standout moments came during the AFC Wild Card Round against the Cleveland Browns. He made three crucial receptions, totaling 44 yards, including a pivotal 27-yard catch that set up a touchdown pass from C.J. Stroud to Nico Collins. This play demonstrated Metchie’s ability to contribute to the team’s success.

With his past struggles behind him, Metchie is primed for a remarkable season with the Houston Texans. He has proven his resilience and talent, and his future in the NFL looks incredibly bright.
Metchie emerged as the winner of the Halas Award, triumphing over esteemed contenders such as Joe Flacco, quarterback for the Cleveland Browns and the NFL Comeback Player of the Year, and Tua Tagovailoa, quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. The Halas Award is bestowed upon an NFL player, coach, or staff member who demonstrates exceptional resilience in the face of adversity.

This prestigious accolade is named after Halas, a trailblazer in the realm of modern football and a founding member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Metchie, who appears poised for a breakout season, becomes the second player in Texans’ history to claim this honor, joining former offensive lineman David Quessenberry, who was bestowed with the award in 2017.
