A wind-driven brush fire in Fontana grew to 85 acres Thursday evening, as evacuation warnings expanded south into Jurupa Valley.
The Canyon Crest fire was first reported shortly after 5:30 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, near Canyon Crest Drive and Weeping Willow Lane.
Evacuations warnings were issued north of Highway 60, east of Country Village Road, south of the Riverside and San Bernardino County line and west of Sierra Avenue.
Wind gusts were reportedly at 20 mph, helping to fan the fire, which spread quickly from San Bernardino County into Riverside County.
Christopher Prater, the public information officer with San Bernardino County Fire, told KTLA that residents near the fire should be “ready to go.”
“Have your stuff ready, important documents and your pets,” he said. “Know your evacuation plan.”
In a post on X at 6:21 pm, officials said the fire had spread to 10 acres. By 9 p.m. it was at 85 acres with zero containment, according to Cal Fire.
Riverside County Fire said a care center has been set up at Jurupa Valley High School, 10551 Bellegrave Ave. in Jurupa Valley.
